Goal Seeking

Goal-seeking is a function available in many analytics packages (for example, it's part of What-If Analysis in Excel).

It asks the question “What do I need to change 'A' to so that 'B' is equal to 'C'”?

In our example, we used it to determine what the level of our tank needs to be to ensure that we have at least 60 seconds of water available.

While its always more efficient to simply rearrange your equations so that you can determine your answer directly, that's often much easier said than done, particularly if there are several different parts involved.

With goal-seeking, you can use the model you've created to ask a range of questions - it's ideal for providing live feedback of the maximum, minimum or ideal configurations for your machines.
